OVERVIEW & OBJECTIVES

The Academic Master in Creative Knitwear Design, is a highly professionalizing research learning experience , uniquely collaborating withover 50 partners across the sector, including spinning mills, manufacturers, brands and specialised laboratories. The Master is in collaboration with Modateca Deanna, an international fashion archive and research centre, which collects, collates and preserves the history of fashion and knitwear in the prestigious archive used by students with more than 60 thousand knitwear garments and accessories. It is aimed at graduates and professionals intending to complete or deepen their knowledge in knitwear, through an extremely specific education experience, which embraces the creative processes of Knitwear Design at 360°.

Students have the extraordinary opportunity to create knitwear capsule collections with professional projects in collaboration with some of the most important brands on the international scene. These projects created in collaboration with a huge variety of different bands annually; i.e: Max Mara Fashion Group, Marni, Missoni, Etro, The North Face, Blumarine, Napapijri, Benetton, Kway, Roberto Collina, to name just a few. Culminating in the past editions of the course with a unique presentation at Pitti Filati with an exclusive fashion show in collaboration with the Pitti Immagine Discovery Foundation.

The students are followed by the top professionals and experts in the sector who, as tutors, accompany them in tackling a tailor made programme: a theoretical-practical course of study, capable of combining creativity and technique, craft and technology, to develop complete design concepts from yarn to product, organisation and production skills; all fundamental elements to make our students highly competitive on the careers market.

The extraordinary added value of the Master is the indispensable presence of a vast network of leading specialist partners in the knitwear, jersey, embellishment, industrial technologyand craftsmanship production sectors and the international brands. Having created a system that give a new impulse to research, experiment and innovate to create a new fashion product is an important investment by the partner industries that participate annually in the experience of CKD.

The Master’s experience is multifaceted made up of specific workshops and technical instruction, research visits to industries in the areas of spinning, laboratories and knitwear factories, workshops on knitting technologies, stitch development and design processes, visits to the main trade fairs in the sector, and the possibility of carrying out research during the entire course of studies within the vast historical archive of Modateca Deanna and dedicated library.

At the end of the Academic Master in Creative Knitwear Design, students will be prepared for the role of fashion designer specializing in knitwear design and jersey. The students also develops a series of skills that can lead to extremely strategic and highly sought-after careers in the Italian and international fashion sector, including: designer in the studio of Italian and international spinning mills, collection coordinator, technical researcher and development manager, product manager, purchasing and raw materials manager.

The Academic Master in Creative Knitwear Design, is addressed to graduates holding a Bachelor Degree or other equivalent study title recognized according to the current regulations related to the course and who would like to begin a study path and a career in Knitwear Design.

To be eligible for the course, students must have:

  • Bachelor Degree or Bachelor of Arts related to the course of study of the Master
  • Bachelor Degree or Bachelor of Arts different from  the above mentioned and not related to the study path of the Master, upon evaluation of the Academic Directorship on the eligibility of the application
  • Professionals with proven experience in the field and students holding a specialization or non-academic study titles related to the study path, upon evaluation of the Academic Directorship on the eligibility of the application

In order to maintain the high quality of the learning experience, the Academic Master in Creative Knitwear Design responds to a limited enrolment policy. To be admitted in the course, applicants are required to submit their resume, motivational letter and portfolio for evaluation and to pass an admission interview with the Academic Directorship.

The education path is divided into modules, through theoretical lessons and lectures, seminars with experts and professionals in the sector, research and design laboratories, visits to events and specialist fairs, exercises, training internship, final test (Final Work).

The course subjects provide the cultural and technical tools to face the project, from the History of Fashion with a particular focus on the History of Knitwear, to the understanding of fibers and yarns, up to the elements of computer graphics that allow students to provide professional presentations of their projects.

Marketing establishes the basis for reading the DNA “codes” of a Brand and interpreting them within the social context. The heart of the master is developed thanks to an intense design activity conducted in collaboration with companies of the supply chain. Supported by the skills acquired in the different areas and with information related to knitting techniques, students work on very different projects in which they express their design process and the ability to work in the delicate balance with the different industry partners.

The course then integrates a research internship experience with various players in the supply chain and ends with the realization of an important personal project.
