RomePattern Cutting, construction and prototyping are the initiating elements of the fashion and costume development for both the entertainment industries, professions without which no project could be realised.
This Bachelor of Arts in Pattern Cutting, Tailoring, Prototyping: Fashion and the Performing Arts industries is so much more than a course of study: a journey within an industry that combines tradition and innovation, whose roots are intertwined between fashion and customs, areas always at the centre of ACM activities.
Today, professional figures linked to pattern cutting, sample creators or period cutting are more crucial than ever. These professionals play a fundamental role in the technical design and development of fashion and/or costume collections for cinema, streaming platforms and /or theatre.
The three-year course, recognized by the Italian University Ministry is committed to developing versatile experts, capable of supporting the process and creatively developing initial ideas into finished products.
The focus is unequivocally on Made in Italy, not only in terms of technical training, but of its authentic value and the research into the traditions that make Italian “know-how” unique. Every detail, every meticulous finish, contributes to enhancing the uniqueness of the construction techniques, highlighting the excellence that makes Italy competitive on a global level.
The Bachelor of Arts lays its foundations on strong cultural skills through an in-depth study of the history of fashion and costume, investigates the context of the style studios, and for costume the relationship with the Costume Designer, the economic, industrial and professional framework to build new competent figures, who combine profound technical expertise with the ability to visualize and interpret the sector.
Innovation in processes, the theme of circularity and sustainability, a high level of craftsmanship, make up the foundations that define the new skills of professionals of the present and future.
Along the way, students will acquire a wide range of technical skills that go beyond manual construction and creation. The “know-how” of pattern cutting, tailoring and construction is transformed into practical knowledge, both in the field and digitally. Expert use of applications such as Lectra, Cad and Clo3D adds a contemporary dimension, preparing students to navigate the ever-increasing demands of industry.
Students who successfully complete the course will be able to work as professionals in one of the two reference areas (Fashion, Costume), according to their vocation, they will be able to work for fashion companies/Maisons, film and theatre tailors or work as consultants, entrepreneurs themselves, starting their own business. Furthermore, students can opt to continue their studies through postgraduate courses dedicated to in-depth study of the project or dedicate themselves to teaching, sharing their experience with future generations.
The Bachelor of Arts in Pattern Cutting, Tailoring, Prototyping: Fashion and the Performing Arts industries is addressed to students with a minimum B2 level of knowledge of Italian language and holding a secondary school diploma or other equivalent study title obtained after at least 12 years of education and allowing access to first-cycle academic courses in the international education system of reference.
In order to maintain the high quality of the learning experience, the Bachelor of Arts in Pattern Cutting, Tailoring, Prototyping: Fashion and the Performing Arts industries observes a limited-enrolment policy. Applicants are required to pass an admission test and interview aimed at evaluating the interest and aptitude towards the subject areas of the course of choice.
1ST YEAR – CULTURE & METHOD
The 1st Academic Year is characterized both by theoretical subjects that represent the cultural basis of design and style, and by learning the fundamentals: History of Costume, History of Fashion, and skills in the textile area (typology of materials, textile culture 1), which represent the alphabet of the language of fashion. During the first academic year, students are introduced to Fashion Design and the technical and technological skills that support it as well as an understanding of the design system and the fashion supply chain. In Tailoring Techniques for Costume, students explore a complex and fascinating world, also essential in the fashion system as it brings technical experience that delves into historical and cultural elements. The digital part, Graphic Design, is introduced and is preparatory to the training experiences of the following years as well as the Professional Design course which explores the economic, structural, and organizational areas of garment production.
2nd YEAR – DEVELOPMENT
The 2nd Academic Year sees the introduction of 3D modeling and the most current technologies alongside the in-depth study of the technologies of new materials in relation to sustainable innovation. A more in-depth approach to culture, accompanied by constant interaction with garments of Fashion and Costume are explored. Students have the opportunity to deepen the technical knowledge acquired during the first year, expanding it and investigating new application areas and to consolidate their skills necessary to accommodate the complexities of the third year.
3rd YEAR – IDENTITY
The 3rd Academic Year is characterized by the construction of personal professional identity. It is the year in which Industry Projects are undertaken out in collaboration with the Accademia’s partner companies, interpreting the codes while respecting the identity, through a personal and current vision. The ultimate aim of this project is the interpretative capacity of the narrative of the creative direction in the creation of the product consistently with the economic and sustainability demands. This constant dialogue responds to the growing needs of the system, the high craftsmanship, the know-how, which have always characterized Made in Italy are now crucial for the purposes of development and innovation in the luxury fashion, and costume supply chain. During this year the student will acquire the skills and maturity necessary to choose which area to direct their personal exploration in, Fashion or Costume. Research visits to national fairs and opportunities to discussion with some of the most important professionals, directors, heads and senior designers as well as with the most important Italian manufacturing companies and directors, actors, producers and entertainment entrepreneurs complete the journey. The preparation of the final work with an awareness and accountability for professionalism which combines historical culture and design culture, artisan know-how, craft and technological innovation.
