We are proud to announce that our alumnus, Gianluca Falaschi, renowned international costume designer for opera and theatre, has been awarded the “Mestieri dello Spettacolo” prize at MAM – Maestro d’Arte e Mestiere. This prestigious recognition, promoted by the Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d’Arte, honours the finest Italian masters who excel in their artistic craft and pass on their skills to future generations.
Born in Rome in 1977, Gianluca Falaschi boasts an extraordinary career. After studying architecture and theatre literature in the capital, he completed his artistic education at the Accademia Costume & Moda, where he honed his creative talent. His work as a costume designer has led him to collaborate with the world’s leading opera houses and international festivals, including the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Opera di Roma, the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, the Opera of Monte Carlo, and the Sydney Opera House, among many others.
During the 2023/2024 season, Falaschi is engaged in designing costumes for two major productions: Die Lustige Witwe, directed by Barrie Kosky at the Opernhaus Zurich, and Così fan tutte at the Wiener Staatsoper, where he also takes on the role of set designer. Beyond his work as a costume designer, Falaschi has expanded his artistic horizons by successfully venturing into stage direction, as demonstrated by his recent productions of Angelica at the Festival della Valle d’Itria, and Adriana Lecouvreur in Mainz and Düsseldorf.
The MAM – Maestro d’Arte e Mestiere award is a biennial accolade that celebrates Italian excellence across 23 different categories of artistic craftsmanship, from theatre to ceramics, jewellery, leather goods, and restoration. Promoted by the Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d’Arte in collaboration with ALMA, La Scuola Internazionale di Cucina Italiana, the award aims to highlight the work of masters who distinguish themselves not only for their talent but also for their commitment to passing on their knowledge to younger generations.
Each MAM winner receives a special piece of art: a bronze casting created by the Scuola dell’Arte della Medaglia of the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato. This unique object, a symbol of mastery and perfection, serves as a tribute to the cultural and artistic value these leaders of Italian craftsmanship represent.
Gianluca Falaschi is a shining example of how education and passion can converge into a successful career in the international performing arts scene. We are proud to have contributed to the training of an artist who has carried Italian excellence worldwide, earning the well-deserved title of Maestro d’Arte e Mestiere.
We continue to support and promote the talents that grow within our Academy every day, confident that many will follow in Gianluca Falaschi’s footsteps, spreading Italian art and culture on a global scale.
