In a unique opportunity, students from the 3YR BA Fashion Editor, Styling & Communication, and Master in Fashion Communication were given the chance to explore the irreverent and boundary-pushing works of Juergen Teller in the Exhibition “i need to live” at Triennale di Milano, together with their lecturer, Riccardo Terzo.
With a career spanning 35 years, Juergen Teller has become synonymous with a non-conformist style that blends seriousness and self-irony. His unique approach to photography creates authentic narratives, fueled by an insatiable curiosity for life and the endlessly surprising world around him. The students had the privilege of delving into Teller’s latest major solo exhibition, “i need to live,” held at the Grand Palais Éphémère in Paris in 2023–24 and subsequently at the Triennale Milano in 2024.
Teller’s exhibition captures the depth of his unparalleled photographic achievements, showcasing over a thousand works that span various genres, including portraiture, landscapes, nudes, still lifes, and ever-changing self-portraits. The exhibition also serves as a testament to Teller’s storytelling prowess, skillfully merging personal experiences with commercial work.
“i need to live” reflects Teller’s exploration of the unpredictable circle of life and his desire to examine his self and familial relationships with new poignancy. The exhibition pays homage to lost collaborators and friends, such as the iconic fashion designer Vivienne Westwood and esteemed gallerist Suzanne Tarasieve. Simultaneously, it celebrates Teller’s personal milestones, including the arrival of his third child and the fruitful creative collaboration with his wife and muse, Dovile Drizyte.
From Vivian Westwood to Bjork, from Kate Moss to Kurt Cobain, Teller’s lens has captured the essence of iconic personalities. The exhibition, made possible with the support of Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello, unveils Teller’s ability to push the boundaries of conventional photography, leaving an indelible mark on the art world. The students’ firsthand experience with Teller’s provocative work undoubtedly left them inspired and enriched, offering a unique perspective on the intersection of fashion, art, and storytelling.
