Gianluca Falaschi, ACM alumnus and internationally renowned Italian Costume Designer, is the winner of the “Best Costumes 2023” award at the eighteenth edition of the Italian Awards “Premio Le Maschere del Teatro Italiano”, an event conceived by Luca De Fusco and Maurizio Giammusso, held on September 7, 2023, at the “Massimo Vincenzo Bellini” Theatre in Catania.
In 2022, it was the students of the 3yr BA in Costume & Fashion who won this prestigious award for the costumes design of the play “Il berretto a sonagli” (The Rattle Cap – Pirandello), directed and interpretaste by Gabriele Lavia.
Born in 1977, Gianluca clinched this prestigious award, akin to the “Oscars” of Italian Theatre, for his outstanding costume design work in Arturo Cirillo’s production of “Cyrano de Bergerac”. His costumes played a pivotal role in the whirlwind of performances, with the actors undergoing constant costume changes to bring the story’s many characters to life. It was a carousel of cloaks, feathers, top hats, and sequins, where the poet-swordsman, as portrayed by Edmond Rostand in the late 19th century, shed his melancholy to become a performer who only truly recognized himself on stage.
The “Best Costumes 2023” Award is a valuable addition to Gianluca Falaschi‘s career. As a former student of Accademia , he transformed his passion into reality, serving as an assistant to renowned costume masters like Odette Nicoletti and collaborating with esteemed directors such as Arturo Cirillo, Davide Livermore, and Giuseppe Marini.
Gianluca’s creative talent now captivates both critics and audiences, thanks to his recognized artistic quality and the refinement of his creations. He has breathed life into stunning costumes for highly significant productions, including “Attila” and “Tosca”, featured in recent openings at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. Additionally, he was honored with the prestigious “Franco Abbiati” Award for the costumes of the opera “Ciro in Babilonia” at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro. The German opera, operetta, and ballet magazine Openwelt twice named him Costume Designer of the Year, first for his work in “Perela” at the Staatstheater in Mainz, and later for his creations in Handel’s “Alcina” in Basel and Gluck’s “Armide” once again in Mainz.
Congratulations, Gianluca!
