CUCCIRELLI INDUSTRY PROJECT | MASTER IN FABRICS INNOVATION DESIGN

From the Vienna Secession to contemporary fashion: our Master in Fabrics Innovation Design students have completed their Industry Project, entitled “L’ornamento del Futuro”, developed in collaboration with Tessuti Cuccirelli & C. Heritage 1940.

The students worked on a textile research and design project developed through direct engagement with a historic name in the Italian textile industry. Founded in 1940, Tessuti Cuccirelli & C. has built a strong heritage of specialised manufacturing expertise, combining craftsmanship, research and innovation in the design and production of high-quality textiles.

Led by Project Leader Albino D’Amato, ACM alumnus and Creative & Design Executive, the Industry Project invited students to explore a specific challenge: to reinterpret the world of the Vienna Secession and Wiener Werkstätte through a contemporary lens, transforming a historic visual language into a textile proposal designed for today’s fas

From the Vienna Secession to contemporary fashion

The starting point for the research was the dialogue between art, architecture, decoration, design, objects and textiles that characterised the Vienna Secession. The work and visual languages of Gustav Klimt, Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser and Dagobert Peche provided references for developing new creative directions, without simply reproducing or quoting the past.

The challenge was to transform this cultural heritage into a contemporary textile language capable of retaining its sense of history and depth without appearing nostalgic.

Students explored a range of possibilities, from Secession-inspired geometries and mosaics to decorative grids and stylised floral motifs, fantastical ornaments and abstract animal prints, as well as graphic elements and patterns inspired by the body, movement and clothing.

The design process focused on developing these ideas through jacquard, or combinations of print and jacquard, while exploring fundamental aspects of textile design such as colour, scale, rhythm, materiality and technique.

The final outcome was not intended to be simply a decorative motif, but a textile capable of expressing an identity, an attitude and a vision, finding a balance between archive and modernity, culture and desire, design and material.

The Final Presentation

The project concluded with the Final Presentation, a key moment in the Industry Project during which students presented the development of their research and the textile proposals created in response to the brief.

The final presentation provided an opportunity to bring together cultural research, design experimentation and fashion application, demonstrating how a historical reference can become a tool for imagining new possibilities in contemporary textile design.

“The Ornament of the Future” embodies one of the principles at the heart of the Master in Fabrics Innovation Design: understanding the history and heritage of textiles in order to reinterpret them through a contemporary sensibility, new techniques and a future-oriented approach to design.

The Master in Fabrics Innovation Design at Accademia Costume & Moda is designed for those who wish to develop advanced expertise in textile design, combining research, design culture, material experimentation and direct engagement with the professional world.

Through Industry Projects, collaborations with companies and leading organisations in the textile and fashion industries, and hands-on design activities, students have the opportunity to work on real-world briefs and transform research into concrete proposals for the industry.

It is a programme for those who see textiles not simply as decorative surfaces, but as a design material capable of defining identity, function and the visual language of contemporary fashion.
