MA Costume Design Final Projects: from Concept Illustration to Costume Creation

Students from the MA in Costume Design at Accademia Costume & Moda recently presented their Final Projects, marking the culmination of an intensive educational journey that brought together historical research, illustration, design development and garment construction. The project reflects the Academy’s distinctive approach to costume education, where creativity, technical expertise and artistic vision combine to prepare the next generation of Costume Designers.

A project where history, creativity and craftsmanship meet

Each final project began with extensive research into the late nineteenth century, encouraging students to translate historical references into an original costume concept. Starting from their own illustrations and concept sketches, they developed every stage of the creative process, from research and design to pattern cutting, construction and the finished garment.

Working from a shared palette of azure tones, students were challenged to focus on silhouette, texture and material exploration rather than colour, allowing craftsmanship and design development to become the central elements of the project.

Learning through making

Throughout the project, students experimented with humble and unconventional materials, transforming them through fabric manipulation, draping, construction techniques and textile experimentation. The objective extended beyond producing a finished costume: it was about developing a professional design methodology that balances technical precision with creative exploration.

This process mirrors the workflow of today’s costume industry, providing students with practical experience across every stage of costume development—from the initial concept to the final garment—while strengthening the skills required for theatre, film, television, opera and live performance.
