PONTOGLIO 1883 INDUSTRY PROJECT | MASTER MENSWEAR DESIGN

A journey between research and design

The Industry Project of our Master in Menswear Design, developed in collaboration with Pontoglio 1883, a leading excellence in velvet production, has recently come to a close, marking the end of an intense and highly formative journey.

A project shaped over time through in-depth research, continuous dialogue and creative development, guiding students through months of rigorous yet exploratory work.

Menswear Then, Menswear Now: a journey through history

Led by the brief “Menswear Then, Menswear Now”, students embarked on a journey across time, exploring and reinterpreting menswear codes across different social classes. Two pivotal moments in Western history — the French Revolution and the Second World War — served as the core of this investigation.

These references opened up a broader reflection on the cultural, symbolic and functional transformations of menswear, providing students with the tools to translate the past into a contemporary perspective.

Capsule collections as personal expression

Through a structured yet experimental design process, students analysed and deconstructed forms, meanings and functions, transforming archival references into a contemporary design language. The continuous exchange with the partner company further enriched the experience, offering a concrete example of the connection between academic research and industry practice.

The resulting capsule collections reflect mature, coherent and highly distinctive projects, each defined by a strong and personal design identity. This project represents a meaningful step within a broader journey: from research to collection, from archive to innovation, from fabric to vision.

The Master in Menswear Design: where culture meets industry

Projects such as this clearly express the identity of the Master in Menswear Design at Accademia Costume & Moda — a programme where tradition and contemporaneity continuously engage with industry.

Students are encouraged to develop an authentic, structured and recognisable design language, enabling them to position themselves within the international fashion landscape with awareness and vision.

In an ever-evolving context, menswear stands as a complex cultural field, requiring designers capable of understanding the past, interpreting the present and envisioning the future.

Our sincere thanks to Pontoglio 1883 and Ernesto Pigni for their valuable support and for contributing to making this experience a meaningful opportunity for growth and inspiration.
