THE LOCATION
The history of knitwear.
Its next chapter.
In San Martino in Rio, in the province of Reggio Emilia, Modateca Deanna is an International Fashion Documentation Centre that preserves and shares an important part of Italian knitwear culture.
At the heart of this story is Deanna Ferretti Veroni, a leading figure in Italian knitwear who has worked alongside international designers and fashion houses to develop their collections. Her experience brings together creative sensitivity, knowledge of yarns and technical mastery: expertise shaped by working with different design visions, now preserved and passed on by Modateca Deanna.
This wealth of expertise also underpins the value of the collaboration with Accademia Costume & Moda. Studying here means approaching knitwear through design culture and the practical experience of those who have helped shape its history.
ACM chose Modateca Deanna as the specialist campus for its Master’s in Creative Knitwear Design to bring education into direct contact with this culture of making. The programme combines activities on site with experiences at partner companies and workshops.
Studying here means connecting what you observe in the archives with what you explore in the workshop. Understanding how a garment was constructed, questioning the possibilities of a yarn, developing a stitch and transforming it into a personal design proposal. The campus thus becomes part of the learning method.

Studying
close to the making.
The Modateca Deanna campus connects the educational experience with the area’s manufacturing history and with the Italian knitwear supply chain. The Master’s extends the work undertaken on site through visits and experiences at partner companies and workshops. Students can explore processes, technologies and specialist expertise, understanding how the different stages of development contribute to the final result. This relationship between place, knowledge and production is another reason ACM chose to develop the programme here. Learning to design knitwear requires familiarity with materials and the ability to communicate with the people who work with them: skills built through observation, practice and dialogue.
