Fashion & Costume Design

From idea to material. From material to form.
Drawing is only the beginning. In Fashion & Costume Design, you learn how to turn a vision into a project, and a project into something that can truly take shape.
This area brings together Bachelor’s programmes, Master’s programmes and Specialization Courses dedicated to design, development and production across fashion and costume. Different pathways, with different durations, levels and areas of specialisation, but united by one clear idea: creativity grows when it meets the ability to make.
Here, design culture, research and experimentation meet an understanding of materials and techniques. You draw, study, build, make mistakes, make changes and start again. You move through every stage of the process: from concept to research, from material selection to design, from product development to production.
Because understanding materials also means knowing how to transform an idea into something possible. And at ACM, the ability to make is never simply about technique: it grows from research, culture and the ability to give direction to your own vision.
You do this in direct connection with the professional world. Brands, manufacturing companies, ateliers and industry professionals become part of your learning experience through briefs, Industry Projects, workshops and collaborations. What you learn therefore goes beyond an exercise: it becomes experience.
The aim is to give you the tools to build your own design identity, together with the cultural understanding and skills needed to navigate a constantly evolving system. Because designing fashion and costume means understanding what already exists, imagining what does not yet exist and having the skills to make it possible.

  • Design and the ability to make
Every idea should be able to become material. Research, design culture, creativity and technical skills come together throughout the entire process, from the first concept to the final realisation.

  • Where design meets industry
Briefs, Industry Projects, workshops and collaborations give you the opportunity to work on real-world situations, engaging directly with brands, companies and industry professionals.

  • From the supply chain to the final product
You learn what happens before and after your project: materials, techniques, manufacturing, product development and production processes all become part of your education.

  • Culture, research and identity
Technique alone is not enough. You study fashion and costume, observe the contemporary world, conduct research and progressively develop your own way of designing and looking at the world.

  • Education within a changing industry
Fashion and costume evolve alongside technologies, materials, production processes and new languages. Your studies prepare you to interpret these changes with curiosity, method and awareness.

The value of an ACM education can also be seen in the careers built after graduation. Designers, costume designers, product developers, stylists, art directors, communications, business and sustainability professionals now work across fashion houses, companies, cultural institutions and independent organisations within the industry.
