MENSWEAR – FLUID FASHION
Adrien Roberts
Why do we still discuss gender in fashion, and why are gender-specific labels used for clothing or study programs like ACM’s Menswear Masters? As society moves towards a more gender-fluid future, history shows that traditionally male garments—trousers, shirts, and jackets—have long been adopted by all genders.
Tailoring, once exclusive to men, was revolutionized by Yves Saint Laurent in the 1960s, making the pantsuit a staple for women. Today, brands like Brioni continue this evolution, with tailoring dominating both men’s and women’s fashion. While menswear influences have shaped women’s wardrobes, we are also witnessing a slower but growing shift towards a more liberated male wardrobe.
Ultimately, studying Menswear and Tailoring benefits all designers, regardless of gender identity.
