Romina, after three years of coordination our Vocational Courses in Fashion Communication here at the Accademia Costume & Moda, it is finally time for the start of the three-year course in Fashion Editor Styling & Communication. How did you reach this goal?
It was a necessary evolution due to two requirements. The first was to respond to a growing request for training by young newly qualified students; the second, however, was to focus on the communication sector and train professional figures according to the increased demand for professionalization reflected in the reality of the work environment.
As the coordinator of both academic paths, what are the major differences between the two?
The Degree in Fashion Editor, Styling and Communication aims to follow the student in developing a creative mindset with a broad cultural background. During the three years of the course, whose working language is English, we aim to reach a progressive awareness of the research field, through a practical approach that sees classroom lectures closely knit to intense laboratory activities, with the aim of getting our young creatives directly involved as much as possible.
The Vocational Course in Fashion Communication is dedicated to graduates and undergraduates of humanistic studies, fashion and communication faculties, or professionals who want to specialize in the field of fashion communication. The course structure includes lectures, seminars, presentations by industry experts aiming to define outlooks on trends in order to create, treat and communicate the visual identity of a brand, a fashion magazine or fashion event.
And what are the requirements to attend the Vocational Course in Fashion Communication?
They are the same three requirements applicable to the Undergraduate Course, plus, a cultural and critical approach.
Can you explain what the role of the Fashion Editor is?
The Fashion Editor is the figure responsible for the processes of design, development and presentation of the contents of a fashion magazine, from photo shoots to the search and selection of trends for features. An editor works closely with writers, photographers, stylists and sales professionals to ensure the highest level of content updates to the reader, maintaining the style and the editorial line of the magazine according to guidelines and requirements.
And what is a Fashion Stylist?
The stylist is a key figure who reads and interprets the fashion system. It is a complex figure capable of condensing different expertise in one role. The stylist has the task of crystallizing a visual image, the message of fashion, of a brand or of a photo shoot. The stylist is able to implement a strategy of synthesis between the aesthetic and psychic dimensions of a brand with the aim of evoking desirability among the target audience by means of composition.
In conclusion, what does it mean to operate in communication within the fashion world?
Today operating in an area as complex as that of fashion communication means being able to read the contemporary and to prematurely grasp its natural evolution.
